New Tiny Titles (#14)

These are the latest Tiny Titles handmade books, created from flotsam and jetsam, discarded paper and cardboard, the finest trash known to Earth, an alchemy of stitching, beading, writing and cutting.

Each has pages for your own souvenirs and writing, along with a few pages of my poetry which is often verse previously published elsewhere. I've had seven books of poetry published and many also in magazines or on websites across the world.

Make your Tiny Title into your own treasure. Buy from me at Happy Tea House in Grey Lynn Auckland NZ, or at Kraftbomb, some are also in The Women's Bookshop, Ponsonby Road, Tamaki Makaurau Auckland NZ.  http://www.womensbookshop.co.nz/

My novels, non-fiction, poetry et al are mentioned here.

Please contact me on raewynalexander[at]hotmail dot com for more info. We can also send these books across the world and have done so many times. Beauty is everywhere, trash may be treasure, art gives meaning to our lives.

Here's one of the poems from these cards -

script a rewritten summer sky

people ran into the streets
every television dissolved
we danced the roads
our voices raised windows
tinkered built-in obsolescence

where empty houses creaked
no one heard any board complain
conversation weather
strangers taught each other languages
young people braided green

a line of unknowns held hands
in a spiral out and on
wound through the streets
their coloured clothing
looped high spots and larks

Chinaman's Hill Market 29 September 2012

Go along and see the new market in Grey Lynn. The market is at the top of what is known as Chinaman's Hill since the area was once populated by many Chinese market gardeners. They used Western Springs for water and could be seen carrying it from there in buckets on long poles, many years ago now.

The market is in the car-park of Farmville, which has excellent fruit and vegetables at really good prices.

Go to the Surrey Crescent shops, cnr of Surrey Crescent and Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland, NZ

Yoo EssAye Tiny Titles - Kraftbomb 27 May 2012

This weekend is Kraftbomb at Grey Lynn Community Centre, I'll have some new Tiny Title books made from ephemera collected on my poetic journey to America recently.  They're called Yoo Ess Aye Tiny Titles and contain poetry written when I was on the trip or soon afterward.

The blog about my travels is here, http://poeticjourneytoamerica.blogspot.co.nz/ including a certificate to show I bought trees to cover the carbon cost of my enjoyment, seeing friends and discovering the stunning U S A. I went to Hawaii, San Francisco, Seattle, Iowa, Chicago and New York, after cruising to Tahiti from Auckland, Aotearoa, NZ.  A boat uses less carbon per person than a plane.  I took mainly trains across the mainland for the same reason, also, it's great to see the country you're travelling through by rail.

Also, some of the Family of Artist books with CDs which brightspark books published just before I left are in my crafty suitcase to bring to the market.

Always such a pleasant occasion and some excellent craft available.

Uncanny Puzzle Jaunt 26 February 2012

I love meeting new people with shared interests and recently decided to hold an event with Jarrad Godman, his art exhibition, together with a launch of the Eye Street Anthology, Eye Street Book and my new CD of poetry and music, Family of Artists with Transistor Davis Jnr and Sandra Bell.

Uncanny Puzzle Jaunt will be held in The Happy Tea House here in Grey Lynn, a lovely covered garden area with an indoor lounge off the garden too. Or sit under the plum tree perhaps? We shall place a table there. Follow the signs from the front gate, where Blue Haven the house is and then, go round the side to the large garden.

Jarrad is mysteriously cutting up magazines for collages, mentions great ideas now and then, has some fine work on the walls of his studio already and I'm looking forward to whatever emerges.

It's been seven years since Eye Street poets launched, Summer Book, our poetry. This new Eye Street Book is perfect bound and has photographs like the last one, except there are more poems and images, along with more poets, Jack Ross, Jacqueline Crompton Ottaway, Alice Hooton, Rosetta Allan, Ila Selwyn, Genevieve McClean, Lee Dowrick and Raewyn Alexander. Family of Artists is a CD of poetry with guitar and has a book accompanying it. Transistor Davis Jnr and I rehearsed for this recording for about six to eight months, every week. Then Sandra Bell provided a soundscape on accordion for the long poem, Lone Elvis. I've designed the CD cover and Eye Street Book, which includes photographs by Jack Ross, a vintage shot and my photography.

Uncanny Puzzle Jaunt is a version of the Beatles' album name, Magical Mystery Tour, since we are making the whole of our property into a place where art, poetry, music and adventure can be found, sometimes with exploration, sometimes pieces and experiences are immediately obvious. We have metres of crumpled white paper like popcorn on long strings, for an installation.

Guests are also invited to dress up and we have prizes for six of you, so please make the effort. There is a dress-up rack of clothes provide at UPJ too. We're asking guests to dress as their favourite artist, writer or entertainer. Prizes are for the Most Popular, Most UNbelieeeVaBle, Most ASTOUNDING, Most Authentic, Most Amusing and a Grand Prize for Excellence.

Some Waywin Craft will also be for sale on the UPJ day.

Wine, tea, cakes and nibbles provided, 26 February, a Sunday, midday to 6.30pm here in Grey Lynn, Auckland, NZ. Art, books and CDs are for sale. Cheque or cash only. Please contact me on raewynalexander @ hotmail.com without those gaps to RSVP.
